Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. –John 1:40-42 (niv)

From our Pastor
My father recently told me about a study he led on worship and “worship wars.” We tend to think that these are something new, but he told me there have been four different worship wars in the American Church alone—times when the church split over music and worship style. The first was in the eighteenth century, over the music of Isaac Watts. His biographers tell us that young Isaac was unhappy with how “dead” the music was. Do you know any of his songs? O God our Help in Ages Past, At the Cross, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Alas and Did My Savior Bleed. Many churches split over these hymns. They didn’t like the change. Some became bitter, some refused to sing, and some even walked out of church. Are you familiar with the hymn, We’re Marching to Zion, by Isaac Watts? The second verse says, “Let those refuse to sing, who never knew our God, but Children of the Heavenly King, may speak their joys abroad. He was saying if you don’t sing these words of praise, you might not be a child of the King. Wow. That’s strong Isaac! The second “worship war” began around the middle of the nineteenth century. America went through a depression, and people were wandering the streets in poverty. Churches began opening for prayer. Out of this came the “Open Door Revival.” With it came a new kind of music that was more personal, testimonial. One of the authors of this new music was a blind lady named Fanny Crosby. She wrote songs like, To God be the Glory, Praise Him, Praise Him, Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine, and Rescue the Perishing. Many of her songs were written at the request of Ira Sankey and D.L. Moody, who were holding evangelistic crusades and wanted music that would call people to Christ. Sankey would sing the songs and play his pump organ, but people rejected the songs and the organ! People walked out saying, “You’re singing human hymns…” The third took place in the roaring twenties. It was the beginning of the jazz era, and a new generation wanted to sing the gospel in an up-to-date way. A pastor by the name of Paul Rader encouraged young musicians to write choruses instead of standard gospel songs. Some of the songs of this era were Only Believe All Things Are Possible, and When we all Get to Heaven. It was also during this time that “gospel music” became popular. Tommy Dorsey, who wrote Precious Lord, Take My Hand said “Gospel music was new and most people didn’t understand. They related it to what they called worldly things—like jazz and blues and show business.” So what’s the point? Music is controversial? Worship creates wars? No. The point is: God is always touching the hearts of people to write music to reach the generation we live in. Is that your desire? I hope so.

South Asia Report
“Therefore, I urge you brothers in view of God’s mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what God’s will is––His good, pleasing and perfect will.” –Romans 12:1-2
In February, twelve Northsiders traveled to South Asia to share the gospel and encourage believers among our adopted Unreached People Group.

First of all, God had been working in India long before we arrived; even before Northside’s partnership with the Awadhi people group. Although we were able to share in many villages that have never heard about Jesus, local pastors have been active in the area planting seeds and discipling new believers. It was really neat to see that the harvest was so ripe! As God convicted hearts, many were brought into the Kingdom. Many of the people are happy and content
with what little they have. They are not bothered by the latest technology and busy schedules. The local pastors often travel up to 30 miles a day to visit and share in the village churches. They live on $100 a month and continually desire to serve more. We have learned so much from the local pastors about serving with humility during our short time together. What a tremendous blessing it was to have such sweet fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ on the other side of the world! As God brings India to your mind please pray for: Strength for the local pastors, new believers’ growth, faith through persecution, removal of the caste system, and for Christ to be proclaimed to every people group, until the whole world hears! –Andrew & Angie Sutton

Prayer Requests
• Sunday: Pray for the pastors of our church partners. Pray that they will have boldness to preach the gospel in their communities. • Monday: Pray for the glory of God to be shown in Bell and Harlan, Kentucky, and Claiborne, Tennessee, during our trip. • Tuesday: Pray for Jeff and Terri Haley and other leaders on the team––that they will serve the people of Appalachia and the Northside team with courage, boldness, and humility. • Wednesday: Pray for team unity. Pray that we
have one spirit, one goal: to share the love of Jesus Christ. • Thursday: Pray for each team member––that they will be a vessel used by God to plant seeds in the lives of the people of Appalachia. • Friday: Pray for the churches of Appalachia–– that, as we leave, they continue to be on the front lines serving our Lord and Savior. Many new contacts and lives will be touched. Pray they continue to be disciple-makers! • Saturday: Pray for Terri Haley and Jessica Hunt as they prepare to join others from Pineville, Kentucky, on a mission trip to Peru in June.

Beach Reach Report
Beach Reach was a great experience for me. As I was getting ready to go, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The worship services really got me pumped at the beginning of each night. They were so uplifting! It was so amazing to be able to share God’s love with everyone down there. I got to help witness to so many people, and I even got to see someone make the decision to turn his life around! Words can’t explain how great it felt to see God working throughout the week. It was an unforgettable experience! – Hannah Duell

What an exciting day it was on Saturday! As team leader, my prayers for our volunteers, leading up to the food drive, were three-fold: (1) Our volunteers would be blessed for serving, (2) The patrons would be blessed for giving, and (3) We would have the opportunity to witness to someone in need. God honored our prayers that day!

appreciation to him. As I watched him leave I thought, “He who has little gave what he could, while those who have plenty gave none.” I saw the Bible in action and am forever blessed for having served. – Kara Ollick
Our volunteers and patrons were truly blessed and we were privileged to share our faith with someone! A man stopped to talk with us about the wonderful job we were doing for our community. He shared with me some bad habits he was dealing with in his life. As his taxi pulled up, we had the opportunity to pray with him––that God would give him the power to conquer these habits, in front of Wal-Mart. Can you believe the awesome power of God?! –Dennis Cline I watched as this man in a wheelchair took 10-20 minutes just to get out of his car and make it to the entrance. I didn’t approach him. He came up to me and asked me what we were doing out there. I told him we were collecting food for Harvest Hope. He asked me to give him a bag and he’d see what he could do. A while later he rolls out with a few cans in the red bag and asked me to get the bag off the back of his wheelchair. I did and expressed my
Food from the Heart––and that is what it was! God was in this, and He is an awesome God! What a blessing we all received in doing his work. We talked to many people, and others ignored us and did anything they could to not talk to us because they thought we wanted their money! Now this is the God part: some people would come out of these stores, give $20, $30, $40, even $50 toward this drive and tell us to buy whatever was needed. They would keep a red bag and then give us their carts that were full of groceries... wow! Folks told us they had been helped by Harvest Hope Food Bank or Mission Columbia, and now they felt that God wanted them to help others because they were helped. It was an awesome day. Young and old, everybody was excited to help. The food came and kept coming in for the needy! What a great day God provided, and may the glory be His!! –John Bailey

Would you like to show the love of Jesus to children in a practical way? Midway Elementary is looking for parents and community members who will commit to mentor a child for one hour a week. Volunteers mentor children in different ways. Some come during the child’s lunch time and eat with them. Afterwards they might go out to recess with them or go to the Media Center and play a board game. Others come early in the morning (7 a.m.) and eat breakfast with the child. Please contact Kay Hendrix for more info or to sign up: 821-0309.
